Magic in the Mundane |
Morocco is a nation of interweave. No single representation can speak for it, or serve to reveal all of its wonder. This is because many cultures, Berber, Roman, Arab and European, have contributed to make Morocco a most unique and vibrant land. The exotic, the traditional, the historic, and the modern are all facets of its character and can everywhere be seen. From the sparse desert architecture to the centuries-abandoned roman ruins, and from the colonial French structuring of town and city to the mosque and palace engineering of Islamic design, such intricacies come together to create and renew in visitors a passion for the simple beauty of the Mediterranean in general, and Morocco in particular. |

Writer Paul Bowles, one among a countless many who have been captivated by the land, wrote these words in his 1926 biography: “Always without formulating the concept, I had based my sense of being in the world partly on an unreasoned conviction that certain areas of the earth’s surface contained more magic than others.” Bowles goes on to say: “Had anyone asked me what I meant by magic, I should probably have defined the word by calling it a secret connection between the world of nature and the consciousness of man, a hidden, but direct passage that bypassed the mind.” The visceral sentiment, so obviously an outsider’s point of view - even if we did not know it was Bowles who wrote it – could easily be that of anyone who blindly admires without really understanding. While Bowles’ words are eloquent, this reputedly mysterious land is not as enigmatic as it might seem. |

The Subtleties of Everyday |
| |
To be sure, every culture has its subtleties and these can be opaque and sometimes incomprehensible to the outside observer. Morocco is far more than a colorful exotic spectacle and a set of design principles – it’s a way of life, defined by a hearty and soulful culture, religion’s guiding principles, and a blessedly fertile landscape. The Moroccans themselves are sometimes thought to be competitive people; in deed, they are intensely curious about the world. At the same time, they are some of the most courteous and friendly people you could ever have the pleasure to meet. Hospitality is a matter of principle as well as pride amongst Moroccans. No matter their means, wealthy or poor, Moroccans take special delight in hosting guests. Meals are large and seconds are mandatory on everything from the couscous to the brewed coffee, mint tea, and fresh oranges. |
