Magic in the Mundane

When life in the modern age feeds us canned culture and commercialism, and condemns us to live and work in sterile soulless boxes, Morocco seems to us a palace of the imagination – exotic, mysterious, and full of magic. Morocco is in deed that rare escape of the dreamer’s dream. But it is the everyday, as well. And while all lands have their subtleties, opaque and sometimes incomprehensible to the outside observer, for natives of the country Morocco is far more than a colorful exotic spectacle and a set of design principles. Rather, it is a way of life, one defined by hearty, soulful traditions, religion’s guiding principles, and a blessedly fertile geography.

        Natural Wonders

Morocco offers a great variety of landscape and culture. Although lasting sunshine characterizes Moroccan skies, the country’s climate differs by region, from coastal to mountain to desert. Depending on where you stand, the white-capped Atlas Mountains or the muted-yellow Sahara sands may be visible in the distance. Throughout, a diverse range of plant and floral life colors Morocco in the springtime. The ancient olive tree and date palm are tall company to marigolds, lavender, narcissi, and nrchids, which dot the countryside along roadside and steam.

        A Layered Legacy
The very different societies of Europe and Africa have come together in Morocco to create a culture which has elements of each, but is quite distinct from any other. In approximately 670 BC, the Arabs arrived in North Africa to introduce a new architecture, and a new faith. The architecture was a vibrant blend of Persian and Roman influence, the faith was Islam, and everywhere in Morocco these legacies are still very much alive. Both architecturally and artistically, Morocco is a fusion of aesthetics – from the sparse desert architecture to the centuries-abandoned Roman ruins, and from the colonial French structuring of town and city to the mosque and palace engineering of Islamic design. The exotic, the traditional, the historic, and the modern are all facets of the country’s character, and can everywhere be seen. However, by far the most interesting detail of any land is its people.

        Common Culture

Fascinating as the people who live in them, each of Morocco’s cities has in itself a story to tell. Of these, Casablanca is perhaps most representative in its population of Morocco as a whole. Mostly Arab in ethnicity, Casablanca is also home to a small Jewish community, a number of Spanish and French, and a small black ethnic enclave of Gnawa. Sometimes thought to be a competitive people, the Moroccans are intensely curious about the world, and at the same time, they are some of the most courteous and friendly people you could ever have the pleasure to meet. Hospitality is a matter of principle as well as pride amongst Moroccans. No matter their means, or ethnic origin, Moroccans take special delight in hosting guests. The open and respectful traveler will discover no shortage of opportunities to mix and mingle with the locals, and through such encounters, the chance to experience first hand the real Morocco.
