Tips on Travel Diplomacy, Part I

The Welcome Guest

Stereotype behaviors are the subconscious negative aspects of a national psyche. All cultures have them, but not all travelers need necessarily be judged by them. With a modest self-conception, an understanding of your place as a guest in a particular country, and a sincere willingness to learn, travel will always be the enlightening, enriching experience it was meant to be. And whether, in your journeys, you see yourself as a representative of your country, or just an ambassador of universal soul, the respect you show to all those you meet along the way will do a great deal toward creating a more peaceful world, not to mention a pleasantly memorable trip. Here are a few tips to ensure you will be a wise and welcome guest.

Leave home without it

• A traveler should never leave home expecting to find elsewhere exactly what he or she just left. And yet, some do. There are those who believe their ways are best, and further, that the world should conform to their norms and practices. This attitude will quickly become a burden to you when you travel. On the other hand, humility will serve you quite well. With a genuine interest in the people whose country and culture you visit, there are no bad experiences, only a wide road to a wiser, more worldly you.

Know or be open to discover

• Key to a successful travel experience is to be aware of the cultural boundaries that exist in the country you are visiting. Culture is a set of unspoken rules of what constitutes respectful behavior, and encompasses standards of time, dress, courtesy, and service. Cultural rules rightly differ among regions of the world, and ignoring these rules will at best be perceived as foolishness, and at worse, as arrogance. Know something about the country as its people before you get there, and make a real effort to stay in tune with your surroundings once you’ve arrived.

Lower your voice

• The volume level in many countries is several notches lower than in others. In Europe, for example, people speak in a much lower tone of voice when in public, and a loud voice is often considered a bragging voice. Eating in a restaurant or café, browsing in shops, or standing in service lines, notice that locals will speak in hushed voices, in a manner that is intended to respect the sensitivities of their fellow countrymen. You will find a more welcoming world if you show the same respect when you visit a place.

Visit, don’t invade

• Noisy, self-enclosed, oblivious to native sentiment, a large tourist group has all the appearance of a foreign invasion, with a mission to conquer the sights near militant efficiency before returning to air-conditioned buses and five star hotel rooms. If you travel with a tour, you will be doing yourself – and the people who live there – a great bit of good by splitting off into twos or just seeing the town on your own. This will open you up to experiences not possible in a group environment. It will make you more in touch with places you want to see, but will also make you more approachable to locals who might then be open knowing you.

Small things that count

• Support small business owners, be nice to service staff, and don’t overtip. Acting the opposite sends a message – one that stings of insidious capitalism, economic arrogance, and your self-estimation vis a vis the rest of the world. Instead of booking with megalithic foreign-owned franchise hotels, find the local equivalent. Make it a point to adjust to the local rhythm, which will likely be much slower than what you are used to. Enjoy the relaxed pace. And whatever you do, don’t be rude to anyone, or flaunt your financial status. Consult the guidebooks for those little tips, and study up on the cultural practices of the country you are visiting in order to avoid seemingly innocent travel blunders.
