Near to the Wadi Rheris, in the heart of the Rheris oasis, this little cat’s cradle of a desert village is one enchanting stroll. The centuries-old township stands from a time of tribal feuding and desert raids. The high towers and heavy fortifications of Goulmima once protected its inhabitants from harm. Typical features of the southern Moroccan architecture, the defensive walls of the ksar enclose not only the villagers, but small herds of livestock. Idling along in a narrow lane, it is possible to hear the rustling sounds of sheep and cattle as they move about in inner courts designed for their keep.
