In the 11th century, the Almoravides conquered a landscape up until then ruled by outlaws and marauders. The town was built up into a thriving commercial center. As part of the great Islamic empire which reached well in Europe, Marrakesh received all the benefits of a flourishing civilization. Andalusian culture became the reference from which Marrakesh gleaned its cosmopolitan flair. Poets, scholars, and philosophers were soon among its many visitors, and with prosperity, the city’s architecture grew lavish. The impressive Koutoubia today still stands mirroring the famed Giralda tower of Seville.
Marrakesh stands framed by its ramparts and in view of the snow-capped mountains of the High Atlas. As a bastion of Islamic art and enchanted splendor, the city continues to fascinate visitors. While the souks are all bustle and commerce, the Jemaa El Fnaa square remains the heart and focus of all activity. Take a stroll through the old Jewish Mellah, or simply get lost in the labyrinth of small lanes and winding alleys that make up this ville en rose. |
