With charms similar to Marrakesh and Fez, Meknes contains some fabulous examples of high Moorish architecture. Impressive gates, imposing ramparts, fabulous mosques and palaces, all of these make up the town that at one time was capital of the country. Its harmonious and remarkably unified urban architecture is a stirring representation of the 17th century hispano-moorish building style - a thing which has put Meknes on UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites.
Meknes is a city which beckons for further exploration. The medina is well-preserved, the souks with their enormous gateways a pleasure to idle through. Defined by three distinct quarters, the medina, the imperial city, and the Ville Nouvelle, Meknes takes wanderers on a path through Morocco’s history and its everyday culture.
Just outside the city stands the Roman settlement of Volubilis. Now a large and fascinating ruin, volubilis was once one of the most important towns in Roman African province. The landscape’s fertile grain and olive store has continued to yield produce since ancient times. |
