For much of its history, Tangier was an international city. In the 14th century, town merchants traded with other notable port towns as far away as Venice. In its contemporary heyday, at the early half of the 20th century, Tangier had a reputation for special charm and romance, imbued by the many now famous writers and artists who flocked to the city to idle the days in the Petit Socco.
Strategically located on the Straights of Gibraltar, a main thoroughfare linking Europe to Africa, Tangier has been a coveted territory. At a time when European nations were carving up Africa amongst them, Tangier found prosperity in foreign administration. Sadly, Tangier’s return to Morocco in 1956 spelled a reversal of fortune for the city.
Tangier today doesn’t hold quite the magic it once did – perhaps simply because aggressive touts make it difficult to wander the city in peace. But if you can persevere, you will find Tangier has a number of unique qualities which make it well worth the visit. |
