Its name derived from the Arabic word, al-cazares, meaning “the fortress,” the town is storehouse of historic architecture reflecting its position as a Moorish stronghold, and later a Christian citadel. Caceres is surrounded by fortifying walls, and piercing the city skyline are more than 10 medieval towers, the most famous of which is the Torre del Bujaco. Fabulously, the town is in fact a blend of several historic styles, including Roman, Northern Gothic, and Italian Renaissance, all intermingled with that of the Moors. Strolling these quiet cobbled lanes, it is impossible to miss being taken by the unique treads of the city’s many conquerors.
