The wide Tagus river-bend circles the Toledo hillside like a natural moat surrounding a sprawling fortress, and the city stands framed often by the glowing clouds of a purple sunset. Toledo remains guardian to architectural gems left behind by the Muslims, Christians, and Jews who lived and worked side-by-side here in the middle-ages. Its medieval streets - narrow, irregular, and twisting - are a captivating afternoon stroll. They shelter within their walls an antique mosque, a synagogue, Gothic and Mudejar cathedrals, Romanesque and Visigothic monuments, a Renaissance palace, and a great many centuries-old casas. A stunning representative of Spain’s historic and richly textured legacy, the city inspired El-Greco to paint the passionate, brooding View of Toledo, and Cervantes to declare the town a "rocky gravity, glory of Spain, and light of her cities."
